Strengthening Pre-wash + Copper Rosewood Massager

Pre-Wash Self Care Duo

self care maxxing

Pre-wash Self Care Duo pairs our bestseller Scalp Primer, a strengthening pre-wash hair oil + our Kansa Scalp Massager, a handheld wooden scalp massager handcrafted from solid Rosewood, with rounded copper tips.

Scalp Primer is a plant-infused, 100% natural scalp treatment, handcrafted in Toronto with amla, fenugreek, curry leaves, rosemary, almond oil and more to hydrate your scalp, clean scalp buildup and strengthen hair at the roots.

Kansa is the word for copper + tin in India - the metal that's been in Indian homes and used in Ayurveda beauty for centuries. It's built for one job most scalp massagers get wrong - improving deep scalp circulation with the copper tooth pins. Stimulates hair follicles by actually working your hair oil down to the scalp, section by section, instead of just sitting just at the top.

What is it +

What is scalp priming and why do we need to do it? 👇🏼

Losing hair on a hair wash day is normal. On average, we shed 50-100 hairs a day. But how much hairfall is determined by how you care for your scalp on hair wash days. 💚

Before a hair wash, it’s so important to treat your scalp + lengths with a protein rich scalp treatment like our Scalp Primer that helps protect fragile or damaged strands from the harsh cleansing friction and stripping effects of shampoos, while repairing weak strands. Think of it as a shield that lets your shampoo do its job without stripping your hair of its natural moisture and strength.

Kansa Scalp Massager

Plastic scalp brushes build up static as they move through your hair. Plastic can't conduct, so the charge has nowhere to go and it sits on your strands.

Rosewood and copper in our Kansa Scalp Massager are both on the other side of that: wood is naturally anti-static and copper conducts, so the charge actually helps improve scalp circulation and stimulates hair follicles.

Why Kansa?

  • Copper conducts heat exceptionally well - it's the same property that makes copper cookware distribute heat so evenly and here it works in reverse, pulling warmth off your scalp about 500 times faster than plastic can. Copper doesn't go neutral after ten seconds the way a plastic brush does. Cool tips, warm scalp, the whole time. Two minutes in, your whole head is awake.
  • The metal that's been in Indian homes since the Indus Valley. The lota, the thali, the diya, the pots that got handed down generations. In Punjab the Thatheras still hammer ithis metal by hand. Generations have seen the impact copper can have in kitchens and in Ayurveda.
All Benefits +

Scalp Primer Benefits

Supports Stronger, Healthier-Looking Hair
Amla, fenugreek and curry leaves have been used for generations in hair care to condition and strengthen the hair from root to length. Combined with sweet almond oil, the formula helps improve the feel of dry, fragile hair and protects against the breakage that can make hair look thinner over time. With consistent use, hair feels stronger, softer and more resilient.

Helps Reduce Hair Breakage
Dry, brittle hair is more vulnerable to snapping during washing, brushing and styling. Sweet almond oil coats and conditions the hair fibre before shampooing, while amla and fenugreek help reinforce the feel of weakened strands. Less breakage means better length retention and hair that looks fuller and healthier over time.

Nourishes a Dry, Flaky Scalp
A dry scalp can feel tight, itchy and uncomfortable - especially after shampooing. Sweet almond oil replenishes the scalp with emollient lipids, while licorice root, tulsi, rosemary and vetiver help condition and soothe the scalp. The result is a scalp that feels softer, calmer and less dry before and after wash day.

Supports a Healthy Scalp Environment
Healthy-looking hair starts at the scalp. Rosemary, amla, fenugreek, curry leaves and tulsi help condition the scalp while our oil base prevents it from feeling excessively stripped during cleansing. Regular scalp care helps maintain the balanced, well-conditioned environment hair needs to look its healthiest.

Protects Hair Before Shampooing
Water and cleansing surfactants can leave already-dry hair feeling rough, tangled and stripped. Used as a pre-wash hair oil, Scalp Primer coats the hair before it comes into contact with shampoo, helping reduce moisture loss and friction during washing. Hair is left feeling softer, smoother and easier to manage after cleansing.

Helps Hair Look Fuller + Healthier
Breakage, dryness and weakened strands can all make hair appear less full. Amla, fenugreek, rosemary and curry leaves condition the scalp and hair while sweet almond oil improves softness and flexibility. By helping protect fragile strands from unnecessary breakage, the formula supports the appearance of denser, healthier-looking hair.

Improves Softness, Shine + Manageability
Sweet almond oil smooths and conditions the hair surface, helping reduce the roughness and friction that can leave hair looking dull and feeling tangled. After shampooing, hair feels softer, looks naturally shinier and is easier to detangle and manage - without using the Scalp Primer as a heavy leave-in oil.

How to Use +
  1. Section your hair - 3 to 4 parts.
  2. Apply Scalp Primer directly to the scalp along each part.
  3. Rest the massager on your scalp and move in slow, small circles. Let the weight from the copper and rosewood do the pressing - you shouldn't need to push.
  4. Work section by section, front to crown to nape. Two to five minutes is the sweet spot. Keep going past the point where you'd usually stop; that's when the scalp starts to feel awake.
  5. Leave the oil on as usual, then wash as normal.

Dry, no product: works perfectly well.

Care:
Wipe the copper contacts and wooden handle with a soft, damp cloth to remove any residual body oils or essential oil pastes from the massage.

For stubborn stains: Wipe the copper pins with a soft cloth dampened with a small amount of neutral soapy water, and immediately wipe the entire comb completely dry with a dry cloth after cleaning.

Prohibitions: It is strictly forbidden to soak the entire comb in water for a long time or rinse it directly under running water to prevent the solid wood base from cracking, deforming or molding.

On the Kansa: Kansa darkens over time. That's oxidation, it's normal, and it's what this metal has always done. If you want the shine back, lemon juice and a soft cloth will do it - exactly how it's been cleaned in Indian kitchens for generations.

Handcrafted, so grain and tone vary slightly piece to piece.

Your questions, answered.

Some questions you might have or write to us. A real person replies.

Can I sleep in Scalp Primer? +
Yes but we don't recommend because a pre-wash hair product is best to leave on for 2–3 hours and wash it off.
Is it safe for colour-treated or chemically treated hair? +
Yes! It's sulphate-free, paraben-free and fragrance-free, and applied before your wash, so it works with colour-treated, keratin-treated and relaxed hair.
How often should I use it? +
Once before every wash, or at least once a week. Consistency is the ritual - most people notice the difference between weeks four and eight.
Why is it fragrance-free? What does it smell like? +
We add no synthetic fragrance - what you smell is the natural aroma of the botanicals themselves: earthy, herbal, gone after you rinse.
How long does one bottle last? +
Used weekly, one 50 ml bottle lasts about 6–8 weeks depending on hair length. Best within 24 months of opening.
Will the herbal aroma in the Scalp Primer linger after hair wash? +
No, the herbal aroma of the botanicals in our Scalp Primer is gone after rinse. We add no synthetic fragrance to our blend.
What is a kansa scalp massager? +
A kansa scalp massager is a handheld scalp massage tool with tips made from kansa - the South Asian name for bronze, an alloy of copper and tin.
Wooden vs plastic scalp massager - which is better? +
Wood and metal beat plastic on three measurable things: weight, temperature and static. A wooden scalp massager with copper tips that warms scalp 500x faster, doesn't build the electrostatic charge that causes flyaways and conducts heat that help scalp circulation.
How do you use a scalp massager with hair oil? +
Part your hair into four to six sections, apply oil directly to the scalp along each part, then rest the massager on your head and move in slow circles for two to five minutes. Let the weight do the pressing. Leave the oil on as usual, then wash as normal.
How often should you use a scalp massager? +
As often as you like - there's no limit with a rounded-tip tool and light pressure. Most people use one on wash day, once or twice a week, as part of a pre-wash hair oiling routine. Dry, product-free use any other day is fine too.
Can you use a Kansa scalp massager in the shower? +
Yes, and it's useful for working a wet hair mask down to the roots. Just don't store it in there. Rinse it, dry it, and take it out - rosewood sitting in a wet shower will warp and crack.
Will the copper turn dark or leave marks on my skin? +
The copper will darken over time - that's oxidation, and it's what this metal has always done. If you use it wet, on damp skin, over a long session, you may occasionally notice a faint greenish mark. That's copper salts, it's harmless, and it rinses off with soap and water. Drying the tips after use prevents it entirely. Check our care instructions above in the 'How to Use' section to know how to clean your Kansa scalp massager.
Is a scalp massager safe for a sensitive scalp? +
The tips are finished round with no points or seams, so it's gentler than most plastic brushes. Go slowly the first time, keep the pressure light, and don't use it over broken or irritated skin. If your scalp is sore or you're managing a diagnosed scalp condition, check with your doctor or dermatologist first.
Can I use a scalp massager with extensions, braids or colour-treated hair? +
Colour-treated and chemically-treated hair, yes - it doesn't touch your colour. With extensions, braids or a weave, use it on the exposed scalp between rows, gently, and avoid dragging the tips through bonds, tracks or wefts. On very wet, fragile hair, go light.
Does a scalp massager detangle hair? +
No. It's a scalp tool, not a comb - the tips are spaced for skin, not for working through lengths. Use it at the roots and keep your regular brush for the rest.
How do you clean a wooden scalp massager? +
Wipe the tips with a dry cloth after a dry session. If you've used it with a mask or in the shower, rinse the tips under the tap and dry the whole thing straight away. No soaking, no dishwasher, no leaving it damp. More care instructions are in the 'How to Use' section at the top of this page.
